lol i was expecting him to say what about Fox News?

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

They don't watch tv.

Hooloovoo 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

When a Windows user has swine flu, there is a chance of him not making it and thus less dangerous than without. I'm surprised that Boris did not see that...

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Hahahaha I love it when the comments are so funny :) But remember that Boris doesn't hate Windows or closed source software in general, because he codes in machine code so everything looks like open source, to him.

huzecong 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Doesn't Boris use Assembly? It says so in the old comic Boris

siovene [S] 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Well that's just a compromise he has to give in to for business reasons.

monstruosity -> monstrosity (Sorry if I seem too pedantic, just trying to be nice. :-))

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Thanks! I'll fix that today.

simon_w 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Wha? There's a world out there?

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

It's called The Blue Box. It's full of people...

Cleo 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Can you elaborate on that?

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

It's the sky. A way to say outside.

Cleo 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

I think I heard that once before. I considered it a myth...

what about a windows user who has swine flu, stole a car to drive away from tsunami and tornado ends up crashing the stolen car into them.

ps windows user are psychopaths to begin with.

ps windows user are psychopaths to begin with

Serious reply here: unfortunately the sad part is that most Windows user (probably 90%+) are not psychopaths or masochists. They're just ignorant. Meaning that they ignore the alternatives, they ignore the fact that computers don't have to be bad and crashing and catching viruses. It's not their fault if they don't know, but it's a plague.

zoid 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Okay, you asked for it!

I do use Linux most of the time. But I also do have a dedicated Windows (XP) machine that actually runs nothing else (in fact, I'm typing on it right now, just to piss you off ^^). And frankly, it runs at least as smooth and stable as the other machines (okay it has slightly more cpu power). I think, this almost religious hatred against SOFTWARE is not only irrational but pathetic. Yeah sure, it's not open source, it's commercial, it's a pain in the ass to get certain things done without using cygwin. So what? You can't neglect the fact that it's the industry operating system number one. And Microsoft pays incredible amounts of money to ensure that the actual motor behind the end-user software AND hardware market stays where it is. Does that mean they're evil? No, they are simply trying to sell software. That's what a software manufacturer typically aims for, remember?

Ouh, I hacked all your operating systems and placed a file where you can write to what you think about what I just said; I named it /dev/null. ;)

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

If you never use yout xp box, then it's no bummer that it runs flowlessly. Dah! The hatred is not about the bad quality of MS's software, which is btw catching up,I hear, with Windows 7, but it's about the Closed Source. It become the industry standard just because they made the money, made a name, played dirty in several occasions. Certainly they haven't lived up to the quality it's expected. And yes, Closed Source sw is evil.

DoDoENT 2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]

Win7 is exceptionaly good; I use it in my VBox to develop .NET applications. It also consumes only 340 MB of RAM which is less than Fedora+KDE4.

OTOH, I don't like Closed Source because I can't see how the program works. Even more I really hate software patents; why in the world I couldn't use some algorithm if I know it, just because someone patented it?!? Btw., see this: http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20091111094923390 I really can't believe that!!

isinned 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Nice find DoDoENT. MS is pretty much garbage. I was raised on Windows machines and when I was old enough and smart enough I switched to Linux (kind of like how I was raised Catholic and when I was old and smart enough I became an atheist, but to be specific, a freethinker). I always knew about Linux (and open-source) but I never did my research, and I wondered "what's so good about it?". When I had my first co-op job at a search engine company I learned why it's so great. My supervisor/boss who I looked at as a role model, was a big open source fanatic, everything that was used to develop was first tried to be done with open source sw if possible (and a LOT is possible to do with open source sw -- thus the company saves a lot of money) so I ran a virtual machine on my XP box and became more familiar with Linux. He later mentioned that sharing is contributing to humanity, and that's when I had my epiphany.

A new low. I'm not surprised anymore. I'm so sorry that regular folks have no idea of what happens.

zea 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

True that, in my opinion, they are psychopaths to themselves. I mean, why on earth would you torture yourself to put up with the poor experience when there's better alternatives?

razeetg -1 points0 points 4 months ago[-]

I use Windows because I want to play GTA IV. Won't work on WINE. C'mon, there's no open source game equivalent to GTA IV! Plus, its not only about the software. You also have to pay the map writers, animators, script writers and what not. I don't believe that software always have to be free, but something like an OS is always better if its free - and one of the reasons I prefer GNU. And most of the hard times are because vendors don't support it :-( Plus, Windows is very expensive - You have to compulsorily buy Antivirus + probably Office (on use open office!)

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

You probably don't understand the difference between free and free.

razeetg 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I do. I was only talking about free as in freedom. Rockstar Games doesn't give much free as in freedom (except to install the game in as many computers as I like). Is there another game, which is free as in freedom, and is close to GTA IV? But something like an OS is better if its free as in freedom, because then I can modify and customize stuff as I like - without installing software to tweak the OS - and still maintain a legit copy of it, blah blah... I know what free means when I'm talking about free software. Free (as in freedom) usually means open source also - and that gives a lot of visibility and accountability.

Wareya 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I only use windows because I can't get linux on a modest machine. >_>

Polarina 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

I use GNU/Linux because Windows doesn't work on my computer.

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

What do you mean? Linux runs better than anything on cheap hardware!

Wareya 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Right now I'm running Debian on 512 megahertz with about 390 megabytes of RAM, with an old video card. My XP machine clocks at 1.6 gigahertz with 2 GB of ram and an ATI x1550. Every other computer I've tried to install Linux on either has terrible hardware like this one or has special hardware with no Linux drivers.

Also, the day that I wrote that the hard drive on the XP machine crashed because it was built wrong.

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

This and the comic's site run on Debian on a virtual machine with only 360MB RAM...

Wareya 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

And that's fine, I run my web server on this same machine. But I can't use GNOME, and 3D is very slow - doing either as the same time crashes even. The RAM isn't a very big problem if I'm in KDE, but everything's always sluggish, and it feels bad. Not as bad as growing up on 98 SP0 and early suse Linux though...

Dikei 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

And the router I'm using to surf and type this comment run Linux with 2MB RAM :)

zoid 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Although I like it, the open source community has some major issues, as well.

Plus: a windows user is used to viruses, so it will have better anticipation when it comes to flus. A penguin will be caught by surprise and die from the shock :)

Dikei 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Not as bad as crashing the stolen car into their computers :)

siovene [S] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Can't upvote you more :)
